The Roman Villa and the Antiquarium

The Roman Villa and the Antiquarium of Desenzano del Garda is the oldest archaeological evidence of the great late ancient Roman villas in Northern Italy. The remains can be dated between the end of the first century. BC and the fifth century. AD and were discovered between 1921 and 1923. The original owners of the villa are not known, but it has been possible to trace the last client: Flavius Magnus Decentius, brother of the emperor Magnentius. The current name of the city of Desenzano would derive from him. The Villa enjoyed a strategic position thanks to the mild climate that can be enjoyed near Lake Garda and the ancient presence of many roads that connected with Southern Italy and beyond the Alps. The Antiquarium is located inside the archaeological area in which a series of materials from the Villa are exhibited. The antiquarium consists of three exhibition halls: the first houses kitchen and table ceramics with small bronze utensils; the second the fragments of the statues that decorated the villa; the third houses the fragments of the fresco decoration of one of the rooms of the villa.
