The Filmmuseum Düsseldorf, located in the heart of the Old Town, was founded in 1993. As an interactive museum, it offers an exciting approach to the world of cinema from its beginnings to the present day. Within the museum, the history of cinema is traced over 2200 square meters and a selection of rare technical devices is presented, starting with the very first history of cinematography. Visitors can admire dark rooms from 1880, film projectors and cameras from the early 20th century to the present day, stage sets, decorations, props, and costumes. Additionally, the visitor is introduced and explained the production processes and the influence of cinema on our lives. In addition to the permanent collection, the Filmmuseum includes an extensive archive, a library, and an in-house cinema with daily screenings of film events. Of the only three Welte cinemas, one copy is still preserved: it dates back to 1929 and is regularly used for silent film screenings.
