The Walled MAD Art District is a monument located in the center of Florence. The complex is located in the former fifteenth-century monastery converted into a prison from 1883 until 1985, still it kept today in the exhibition. The prison is a testimony of the Resistance during the Fascist era. The MAD is a project of artistic innovation and production with the aim of promoting contemporary art in the city of Florence. Its exhibition halls are divided into a space dedicated to contemporary arts magazine, a room dedicated to international exhibitions with the first floor cells and a large performance hall and theater. On the second and third floors are developed of the former prison cells housing the offices and studios of the artists in residence. Every year many artists are housed in the Art District Walled space to develop special exhibitions on current and contemporary issues. The MAD is dedicated to promoting international exhibitions, workshops, lectures, performances and talk based on the contemporary artistic languages.
