MAD Murate Art District

The MAD Murate Art District is a monumental complex located in the center of Florence .

The complex is located inside the former fifteenth-century monastery transformed into a prison from 1883 until 1985, still preserved today in the exhibition spaces. The prison represents a testimony of the Resistance during the Fascist era. The MAD Murate Art District is a project of innovation and artistic production with the aim of promoting contemporary art in the city of Florence.

Its exhibition rooms are divided into a space dedicated to contemporary arts magazines , a room dedicated to international exhibitions with cells on the first floor and a large room for performance and theater . On the second and third floors are the cells of the former prison that house the offices and studios of the artists in residence. Every year many artists are hosted in the Murate Art District space to develop temporary exhibitions on current and contemporary themes. MAD is responsible for promoting international exhibition activities, workshops, conferences, performances and talks based on the artistic languages of the contemporary.
