MAF National Archaeological Museum of Florence

The MAF National Archaeological Museum of Florence is located in the historic center of the city.

The MAF National Archaeological Museum of Florence is one of the oldest in Italy and was officially established in 1870 by King Vittorio Emanuele II.

The National Archaeological Museum of Florence today includes a large collection of Roman and Egyptian antiquities . Originally the Egyptian collection was brought together under a single museum detached from the archaeological one. The heritage was expanded thanks to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II who financed an expedition to Egypt with Jean - François Champollion and Ippolito Rosellini, both Egyptologists.

The finds collected were divided between the Louvre in Paris and Florence. Starting from 1883 with the Director Ernesto Schiapparelli the collections increased considerably. The Greek - Roman and Egyptian collection is made up of varied finds such as: bronzes, funerary objects, ceramics and terracotta, coins and sculptures in plaster and marble .

Today it is possible to admire most of the ancient Medici - Lorraine collections , the Egyptian Museum , part of the topographical section , with large Etruscan funerary complexes and a rich section of Greek vases found in the Etruscan tombs. Among the most famous finds preserved in the museum are the François Vase and the Enigma of the island of Pesaro .

A new section has recently been available dedicated to the ancient gems of the Medici and Lorraine and the Lorenzini Head.
