closed SKREI - THE JOURNEY

The show

After the period of forced closure due to the Covid-19 emergency, the Stelline Foundation has once again become the protagonist of the Milanese art scene, placing the emphasis on contemporary photography. Reopened, continuing the appointment with Ganga Ma by Giulio Di Sturco, in fact, from 3 to 22 November 2020 it will host the photographic exhibition Skrei - The Journey of Valentina Tamborra, organized and promoted in collaboration with the Norwegian Seafood Council and with Tørrfisk fra Lofoten AS and curated by Roberto Mutti.

On display are the shots - about 40, some of which are large-format - by the Milanese photographer whose project revolves around the theme of travel, as the title underlines: skrei, in fact, is the name of a particular type of Norwegian cod and drift from an ancient term of Viking origin which means precisely to travel in the sense of migrating, moving forward. This fish makes a real migration every year from the Barents Sea to return to the northern part of the Norwegian coast where it will lay its eggs.

A journey thousands of kilometers long, therefore, like the one carried out by Valentina Tamborra with her photographic work, which starts from distant roots and makes a long tour to then find the points from which it started. It all began in the Vatican Apostolic Library in Rome and in the Marciana National Library in Venice, where the testimonies of the adventures of the noble navigator Pietro Querini are kept. The man, who survived the sinking of his carrack, arrives at the Lofoten islands in 1432 and is rescued by local fishermen who make him discover and learn about the methods of drying, preserving and preparing cod, which he exports on his return to his Venice, marking the culinary fates of stockfish in the Italian tradition.
