From 14 September to 6 January 2026
The Maze of Masone for autumn 2025 presents the exhibition Knock Knock Knock. Iron Guardians from the Cesati collection curated by Alessandro Cesati and Fondazione Franco Maria Ricci. From September 14, 2025, to January 6, 2026, visitors will be guided to discover a unique collection in the world of door knockers, more commonly known as knockers or batacchi.
Interacting with the exhibited artifacts will be images of doors portrayed by the photographer Massimo Listri, reinforcing the idea that connects ancient knockers to the concept of limit, passage, or boundary.
An unprecedented "wonder room," full of suggestions and meanings. Through the texts by Stefano Salis - accompanying the exhibition - the theme of the "physical threshold" and "symbolic threshold" will be explored: a theme more relevant than ever in today's world, and marking the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Maze of Masone, itself an emblem of a continuous crossing between interiority and the external world. For a few months, these works, suspended between decorative art and mystery, will populate the rooms of the Museum hosting the art collection of Franco Maria Ricci, the visionary publisher known worldwide for his love of the unusual, the marvelous, the enigmatic, and the less traveled paths of Art History.
Alongside locks and keys, the "knockers" are objects of extreme executive complexity, reaching the highest aesthetic levels in the field of ironworking, a material ennobled thanks to the surprising skill of craftsmen - almost always unknown - capable of forging unique pieces where executive expertise, functionality, and high symbolic value come together to create true works of art. Not by chance, in the realm of collecting iron objects, door knockers have always played a significant role with prominent presence in the most important public and private collections, such as the Le Secq des Tournelles Museum in Rouen, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Civic Art Collections of the Castello Museum in Milan, but also in numerous American and European private collections, including the famous Mylius collection.
