The show

The GAM of Turin presents the great Giorgio de Chirico exhibition. Back to the Future, Neometaphysics and Contemporary Art , a dialogue between Giorgio de Chirico's neometaphysical painting (Volo, Greece, 1888 - Rome, 1978) and the generations of artists who, in particular from the 1960s onwards, were inspired by his work, recognizing him as the master who anticipated their new vision and who with his neometaphysics placed himself in direct confrontation with younger authors.
The exhibition curated by Lorenzo Canova and Riccardo Passoni is organized and promoted by the Torino Musei Foundation, GAM Torino and the MetaMorfosi Association, in collaboration with the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation and presents about a hundred works from important museums, institutions, foundations and private collections.
Giorgio de Chirico's metaphysics , in his original and future vision, has influenced different attitudes and genres, not only in the field of visual arts, but also in literature, cinema, new digital technologies, reaching unexpected boundaries such as video games and videoclip, in a global interest that goes from Europe to the United States to Japan.
Today posterity, free from the stereotypes of certain condemnations, can "have its say", as he guessed with his genius Marcel Duchamp in a text on de Chirico of 1943. In this context is inserted the new attention for the period of the neometaphysics of de Chirico (1968-1978), which represents at the same time a return and a new departure, a phase of new creativity and a return to the images of one's past, through a new point of view and new formal and conceptual solutions.
Thus, already in 1982, Maurizio Calvesi , ideally addressing the master in his fundamental volume La Metafisica clarita , underlined the importance of the neo-metaphysical de Chirico for contemporary art: "because we recognized your colored chiaroscuro, your spheres, your signals and your arrows, your backs and your smokestacks, your enameled objects and now as they detached from the paintings, something of your brightenings and your suspensions, in the new moment of an art that spread like a concert or a refreshing rain ". Not surprisingly, de Chirico's neometaphysics already seems to dialogue with pop art and international art, particularly American, and in those years Andy Warhol himself admittedly recognized de Chirico as one of his precursors, and paid him homage with a famous cycle of works in which he presented a revisited and serial metaphysics.
With a painting of great intensity and chromatic happiness, the neo-metaphysical de Chirico therefore seems to respond to the tributes of younger artists by creating a dialogue at a distance of great intensity and vitality. In this way de Chirico has positioned himself as one of the direct sources of the art of many generations of Italian and international artists, suspended between the images of urban signals, the goods of mass civilization and the memories of a classic and lost beauty, a approach anticipated by de Chirico himself in his novel Hebdomeros.
The exhibition highlights this intense and profound relationship, linking de Chirico's neometaphysical works with new trends in Italian and international art such as Andy Warhol's Pop art, Valerio Adami, Franco Angeli, Mario Ceroli, Lucio Del Pezzo, Tano Festa, Giosetta Fioroni, Gino Marotta, Ugo Nespolo, Pozzati Concept, Mimmo Rotella, Mario Schifano, Emilio Tadini . The exhibition also features a great follower of Metaphysics such as Fabrizio Clerici , the painting of Renato Guttuso and Ruggero Savinio , together with great international artists such as Henry Moore, Philip Guston, Bernd and Hilla Becher. The itinerary also offers masters of poor art such as Giulio Paolini and Michelangelo Pistoletto, the conceptual visions of Fabio Mauri, Claudio Parmiggiani, Luca Patella and Vettor Pisani , up to the geometric shadows of Giuseppe Uncini, the photography of Gianfranco Gorgoni, the sculptures by Mimmo Paladino, to the paintings of Alessandro Mendini and Salvo, to the mystery of Gino De Dominicis, to the tableaux vivants of Luigi Ontan i, and to protagonists of the latest international generations such as Juan Muñoz, Vanessa Beecroft and Francesco Vezzoli.
In addition to the loan of the neometaphysical works of the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation, the exhibition presents a digital animation by Maurice Owen and Russell Richards , together with works by contemporary artists from the collections of the GAM of Turin and among them Claudio Abate, Gabriele Basilico, Luigi Ghirri, Franco Fontana, Fausto Melotti . A small section of the exhibition, like a precious insert, is reserved for the theme of quotation and copying, a favorite exercise by de Chirico in his long research on the painting of the great masters and presents an original drawing by Michelangelo from Casa Buonarroti, together with drawings by de Chirico dedicated to the study of Michelangelo's frescoes in the Vault of the Sistine Chapel and to works from the famous cycle on Michelangelo by Tano Festa, a painter who was among the first to understand the innovative strength of de Chirico's painting, in a connection with the art of the past which, in the curve of time, has the power to re-establish the art of the future.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog of Gangemi International editions with texts by Lorenzo Canova, Riccardo Passoni and Jacqueline Munck.
