From India to China, from Southeast Asia to Japan, an exhibition like a journey to discover the language of symbols in Buddhist art and iconography, through works and images, graphic elaborations, and scientific materials created for the occasion.
History and civilization, art and culture, forms and aesthetics, symbols, themes, and iconographic contents of one of the most extraordinary chapters in the history of international art and exchanges between East and West, told through objects of a millennia-old art tradition. From aniconic art to the anthropomorphic representation of the Buddha, from archaic forms to the construction of the canon of symbols, from philosophical contents to the language of forms, from the culture of images to images for worship, from the centrality of the body to the symbology of postures and gestures, from the iconography of figures to the elaboration of compositions.
On display are works from the collection of the Museum of Oriental Art Edoardo Chiossone - both works on rotation from the deposits, normally not visible to the public, and works present in the path of the permanent exhibition - and from private collections.
Furthermore, from February 28th to April 21st the exhibition is further enriched with a special exhibition section: "Japanese Paintings and Prints from the Collections of the Museum of Oriental Art E. Chiossone" in which graphic works of particular artistic and iconographic interest related to the theme of the exhibition are displayed and presented to the public for the occasion.
