The MCBA in Lausanne, founded in 1841 and relocated in 2019 to the new headquarters in the cultural district Plateforme 10, next to the train station, stands out among the main art museums in Switzerland. Designed by the Spanish studio Barozzi Veiga, the building in monolithic gray bricks evokes the industrial past of the site and provides ideal filtered lighting for the exhibited works.
The permanent collection includes over 10,000 works, including masterpieces by Vaudois artists Ducros, Gleyre, Steinlen, Vallotton, and Soutter, which constitute one of the most important sections of the museum. The permanent exhibition "La Collection" is spread over two levels and offers about 300 works from the 18th century to today, focusing on currents such as post-impressionism, cubism, abstraction, and contemporary art.
Every year, the MCBA offers about nine high-profile temporary exhibitions, including monographs and thematic exhibitions, accompanied by a rich program of guided tours, workshops, and family activities. Among the innovative initiatives, the biennial Jardin d'Hiver stands out, an invitation-only competition for artists linked to Vaud.
