A story about the complex relationship between art and madness; an in-depth look at the personal experiences and production of authors who have written important pages in the history of Italian art of the twentieth century, whose education developed in the traditional field of studies, has led to different outcomes after experiencing a profound impact from a mental institution and the search for authors who discovered the power of art and their own talent in a psychiatric hospital.
This is the common thread that guides the exhibition Antonio Ligabue and the art of the Outsiders, scheduled in the rooms of the Palazzo delle Paure in Lecco, from June 13 to November 2, 2025.
The exhibition, curated by Simona Bartolena, produced and realized by ViDi cultural and Ponte43, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco and the Urban Museum System of Lecco, presents 14 works by Antonio Ligabue and around forty paintings and drawings created by masters such as Filippo de Pisis, Carlo Zinelli, Gino Sandri, Edoardo Fraquelli, Pietro Ghizzardi, Mario Puccini, Rino Ferrari, artists who have experienced the asylum or whose research has followed unconventional paths, outside the norm.
Some of them entered psychiatric facilities as established painters, while others discovered themselves as artists in the rooms of a nursing home. All of them stood out for their diversity, their free thinking, their being outsiders, poetic bearers of different points of view. Eight lives. Eight personal stories. Eight artistic languages out of the ordinary, capable of telling the complex relationship between art and madness, a difficult intertwining that will leave the visitor with important reasons for reflection.
