At his first solo exhibition at an Italian public institution, Luca Moscariello (San Giovanni in Persiceto - Bologna, 1980) focuses on the main aspects of his artistic journey, finding a squareness in painting. Following his participation in the Lissone Prize in 2014, the exhibition "Minimal dynamics of camouflage" allows the artist to reveal the interlocking and paradoxes staged in his recent "Puzzles", a series that began in 2018 and is characterized by square formats. The paintings, selected and specially created for the spaces of the MAC, lead the eye to penetrate the pictorial forms, inviting the viewer to a careful reading, in order to distinctly deduce the visual misunderstanding hidden within a perimeter in which different image construction planes are embedded. The visual deception arising from the works reflects on the current state of contemporaneity, which, due to an overload of stimuli, has accustomed viewers to curiosity, preventing them from penetrating the veil that surrounds our daily lives. In an attempt to re-educate the eye to vision, the warning that Moscariello addresses to the public is therefore to distrust normal sensory faculties. In his latest works, the artist requires an effort from us, both in terms of participation and subtraction, in order to project our gaze beyond the pictorial scaffolding. The development of perceptual play - assumed as an investigative approach - has marked Moscariello's journey from the beginning, leading to stripping away the narrative component to explore the potential of the pictorial medium; color, deconstructed and modified in its infinite possibilities, has instead transformed from a descriptive element into an intimate one. Oscillating between the desire to expand time and the will to soothe the visual overwork that entangles and deceives the eye, the artist seeks to reclaim silence through a pictorial process capable of eradicating every background noise, in favor of a meditative and shared space.
