Adam Phillips was right: prolonged applause risks becoming unsettling. Equally concerning is the rewarding frenzy that no one can escape from anymore; that healthy competition, that desire to excel through self-denial and effort, seems to have been mortified by the great plethora of praises and approvals that have turned (too many and futile) victories into an excess of vanity. Contrary to the prevailing hedonism of our society, which celebrates the cult of beauty and inexorably condemns us to mental atrophy, The golden path is an ideal fitness route scattered with sculptures that subject the user to an effort of attention and concentration. Initially developed in the form of an instruction manual, with technical drawings illustrating the assembly stages of joints and modular elements, The golden path can be conceived as an Open source project. These exercises will not benefit our bodies, but rather our brain faculties; the gym structures designed by Bergantini in collaboration with the KUR-MAC architecture studio are indeed too slender and precious to satisfy practical use, a discrepancy that is also found in the environments reserved for them, namely museum rooms, detached from the performance of any physical activity. The shimmer of 24k gold, which pearls the metal structures, is instead contrasted by the grayness of the photographic sequence that immortalizes a series of trophies, deconstructed and recomposed by the artist in total freedom, following a minimalist aesthetic that winks at both eros and thanatos. Reduced to two-dimensionality, the awards appear inconsistent and emptied of their prestige. Furthermore, they have been converted from symbols to stereotypes, intentionally lined up on a single horizon line that highlights their sterile and anonymous form. Playing on the dichotomy between real and virtual space, Bergantini involves us in a cultural training (which is also a "reverse simulacrum" of the society that surrounds us) to rediscover the virtues of the mind, and not just those of the body.
