First solo exhibition of Wang Zhongjie in an Italian museum, Nowhere presents a selection of the artist's recent works. Wang Zhongjie seeks with all of himself the reason, the meaning of his existence, and he seeks it through the thing he does best, which is painting. Wang Zhongjie did not study at the Academy of Fine Arts, yet his relationship with the canvas is not simple or immediate. It is as if in front of every untouched surface he finds himself facing the mystery of life. The search for the interpretative "key," which he often talks about, does not refer to technical issues, but to existential questions. His paintings have transitioned from the highly complex and original figurative language of a few years ago to vaguely geometric compositions, in a process of increasing formal simplification where the colors, confined within the perimeter of the canvas, have become frames of empty spaces. Or rather: incredibly rich monochrome surfaces, the result of the overlapping of many layers, emitting an internal light that makes them strangely and magically luminous. The artist indeed longs for "something immutable" that is able to "reveal the core."
