The Serpentine Sackler Gallery, is one of the two exhibition venues of the Serpentine Galleries in London, and is housed in a historic building, within Kensington Gardens.
The gallery was built from a former explosives deposit dating back to 1805 (called The Magazine, "Il Magazzino") and after being renovated and enlarged to a design by Zaha Hadid, a world-famous architect, it was opened in 2013. Overall it occupies an area of 900 square meters.
The structure of the original building has been retained but redesigned as a large open space full of natural light that could fit well into the context of Kensington Gardens.
Being a branch of the Serpentine Gallery, it is located just five minutes from the latter, just across the Serpentine bridge. The realization of the project was made possible thanks to a donation from the Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation, hence the name, and from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The Serpentine Sackler Gallery mainly hosts seasonal temporary exhibitions, usually four per year, but is also a social space and center for the promotion of contemporary art
In addition to the exhibition spaces for temporary exhibitions, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery offers a meeting space, a restaurant, a shop and rooms for the staff.
