The Tower of London is one of the historic buildings in the city of London. It is a real fortress built in 1066 as one of the symbols of the Norman conquest of England. The Tower, over the course of its history, has undergone several changes and expansions and has been ruled by the various heirs to the throne over the centuries.
Nowadays it is part of the Historic Royal Palaces, an independent foundation that deals with the conservation of historic buildings and, since 1988, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Tower of London is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the English capital and is visited by millions of tourists every year. Inside are the royal menagerie, dating back to the time of Henry III, the armor collection and that of the crown jewels. The latter are kept in the so-called Jewel House, an area specially created to protect jewels of inestimable symbolic and economic value such as crown, scepter and sword. Visitors can also admire the remains of the medieval palace, reopened to the public in 2006. These were the apartments and halls once inhabited by kings and queens.
