The Wellington Museum, inside Apsley House, is an art and artifact museum in Hyde Park Corner, London. The museum holds works by various artists including Antonio Canova, Jan Steen, Diego Velázquez and Rubens.
Apsley House, home to the collection, was the London home of the British hero Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. He was indeed Napoleon's winner at Waterloo in 1815.
The residence was built between 1771 and 1778 by the architect Robert Adam for Baron Apsley. Many years later it was enlarged and modified by architects Benjamin and Philip Wyatt. It was later donated to the nation.
The museum became such only in 1852, the year in which Wellington died and since 1947 the entire collection belongs to the United Kingdom.
In addition to the permanent collection of paintings and sculptures belonging to the duke, among which there are also eighty-two works previously belonging to the Spanish royal collection, the museum also exhibits a series of artifacts that belonged to Wellington: pieces of silverware, his death mask, medals and honors and ceramic objects.
