The Palace of Westminster, seat of the English parliament, is listed by Unesco as a world heritage site.
The building was built in two phases: the first from 1016 to 1097 and the second from 1840 to 1876 after a terrible fire destroyed it in 1834.
The Palace of Westminster, in the heart of London, directly overlooks the Thames and is characterized on the outside by the English Gothic style.
Inside, on the other hand, there are 1100 rooms divided over four floors for a total of almost 5 km of galleries. The main rooms include the Robing Room, the Royal Gallery, the Prince's Chamber, the House of Lords, the Peers 'Lobby, the Central Lobby, the Members' Lobby and the House of Commons which are aligned, following this exact order. , along a line running from south to north. In the Palace there is also the Westminster Hall, which is one of the largest halls in Europe not supported by pillars but built with a roof of two-arched beams. Westminster Hall has played an important political and social role throughout history: trials, civil rites and coronations took place there.
The Palace of Westminster, also home to Big Ben (the clock tower), the Chapel of St. Stephen and the Undercroft Museum, can be visited throughout the year through organized tours during which it is also possible to attend the sessions of parliament.
