The Whitechapel Gallery in London has always been a point of reference within the panorama of international contemporary art.
The Gallery is located in the homonymous district of the English capital from which it takes its name.
It was founded in 1901 on the initiative of Reverend Samuel Augustus Barnett, who organized annual exhibitions for the community, convinced of the educational value of art.
The construction of the building was entrusted to the architect Charles Harrison Townsend, among other exponents of the current Arts and Crafts.
The Whitechapel Gallery for being an active exhibition center, so much so that in its spaces masterpieces by masters of modern art have been exhibited, such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo.
Among the contemporary artists: Sophie Calle, Paul Noble, Thomas Struth, Sarah Lucas and Mark Wallinger.
In 1938, the Whitechapel, hosted the famous Guernica painting by Pablo Picasso, exhibited for the first and only time in its history outside of Spain. The galleries, exhibitions and events are distributed throughout the year with a full program of events.
In short, the gallery is confirmed as a point of reference both for the city of London and for the whole of Europe as one of the most solid and reliable realities of contemporary art.
