The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid is a prestigious art gallery and cultural center. It is based in the Villahermosa palace, very close to the Prado museum.
The museum's collection comes from a private collection of the family of the steel magnate Thyssen-Bornemisza who grew rich in the war period of the Second World War. He then married a Spanish woman and his works from Switzerland, where they were previously kept, were moved to Madrid. They have been owned by the state since 1933.
The baron had the great merit of putting together one of the initially private, most significant collections in the world.
Particular attention is given to the Italian Renaissance and modern art so that today you can admire works by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Antonello da Messina, Tiziano, El Greco, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Bartolomé Murillo, Giambattista Tiepolo, Canaletto, Bellotto, Francesco Guardi, Pieter Paul Rubens, Antoon van Dyck and Rembrandt.
Well represented are also impressionism and post-impressionism with Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard; Fauves painting with exponents such as Edvard Munch and expressionism. There is also a section dedicated in part to the historical avant-gardes from futurism to cubism, to then proceed towards post-war experiments and pop art.
