The Palacio de Liria is one of the most important and richest private residences in Madrid. Today it is part of the three branches of the Fundacion d'Alba. Its construction dates back to between 1767 and 1785 by order of the third Duke of Berwick and Liria, Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart y Colón.
Although in November 1936, following the Spanish Civil War, the building was gutted by several fires, fortunately most of the collection was saved and placed in safety near Madrid, for example at the British Embassy, at the Museum. del Prado and at the headquarters of the Bank of Spain.
Today it is the residence of Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, 19th Duke of Alba and seat of the Casa de Alba Foundation and houses one of the most important private art collections in the world along with documents, images, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, engravings, books and a large set of porcelain. The flagship of the collection are certainly the paintings of great masters such as Goya, Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán, El Greco, Ribera, Rubens, Titian, Palma Vecchio, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Madrazo and Winterhalter.
