From 12 February to 28 June 2026
With "The Sense of Snow", the MUDEC - Museum of Cultures opens a new chapter of the dedicated path to the Cultural Olympiad of Milan-Cortina 2026. After "The Moment the Snow Melts", the impressive and poetic installation by Chiharu Shiota that inaugurated the season in the museum's Agorà, the focus is now on snow as a natural, symbolic, artistic, and anthropological phenomenon.
The exhibition, curated by Sara Rizzo and Alessandro Oldani, is open to the public with free admission from February 12 until June 28, 2026, and is accompanied by an articulated program of initiatives inside and outside the museum that, thanks to the joint work of MUDEC, Office of Art in Public Spaces, and Office of Networks and Cultural Cooperation, will contribute to making snow the protagonist of a shared narrative. Among these proposals, the new issue of the magazine "MU - MUdec United", which will offer additional perspectives and interdisciplinary contributions on the theme of snow, and a large poster art operation, curated by studio FM, which starting from February will expand the exhibition's story into urban space, beyond the exhibition halls, in Via Ventimiglia, near the MUDEC.
The path presents over 150 works and objects including ethnography, scientific testimonies, paintings, photographs, videos, and contemporary installations, articulated in a journey that ranges from the geometry of snowflakes to the European and Japanese artistic imaginary, to the impacts of climate change and mountain overtourism.
The exhibition also includes an important focus on Arctic and Tierra del Fuego populations, delving into their adaptation systems and spiritual practices related to shamanism. Many of the artifacts come from museums that are members of the MIPAM network, which responded to MUDEC's call with exceptional loans: among these, the Sami shamanic drum from the MUCIV Museum of Civilizations, Rome, and the complete reconstruction of a Selk'nam hunter's kit, featuring the guanaco fur mantle from the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia.
The MIPAM network - Italian Museums with Heritage from the World, promoted by MUDEC and established in 2025, brings together over 25 Italian museums with collections from Asia, Africa, America, and the Pacific. The network's objective is to focus on dialogue, transparency, and good practices in the management of global cultural heritage. The exhibition owes its existence in part to this collaboration: along the exhibition path, a graphic sign will give recognition to the works from MIPAM museums, many of which are being presented to the public for the first time.
