The show

The Sozzani Foundation in Milan hosts the personal exhibition dedicated to Kris Ruhs , from January 16 to February 27 . Kris Ruhs attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and began his artistic explorations in the seventies, when in the visual arts there was a tendency to return to the creative bases in different expressive techniques, giving the same attention to both the creative process in action and to finished works. .

In these years he quickly surpassed paper and painting as a means of expression and created a first series of sculptures inspired by discarded wood in the streets near his studio south of Broadway. Material scraps of ever-changing shapes and sizes become his favorite materials. Old wood is sawn, planed, painted and burned to give a new surface and a new shape that implies a metaphorical depth and weight. Although still recognizable as wood, these first "boxes" reflect the new processes to which they are subjected. The boxes of the Eighties prefigure the germinal model of subsequent works and the artist's relationship with new materials: from rope, to iron, from ceramics to glass, from corten steel to light.

His strong ability to extrapolate the expressive potential from a structure, materials and colors allows him to overcome the usual three-dimensional boundaries of sculpture and two-dimensional painting: from the surface of a paper, a wood and a canvas, to the thin border which oscillates between abstraction and representation. This continuous search for the process and its expression leads him to different aesthetic solutions, with which Ruhs continues to confront. Light in motion - in process - and still light on the inert surface of a work reveal a new level of the creative process over time. Matter and light can move or remain in a state of rest. Their process of growth and dissolution is stopped or guided by the artist as a companion who reveals their internal process, not his own.
