Fondazione ICA Milano presents, from 18 January to 6 February 2022 on the ground floor of the Foundation, the exhibition White Noise, a solo exhibition by Olympia Scarry. His works are placed in dialogue with the works of Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla and with a sound composition by Stephen O'Malley.

For White Noise, the Swiss American artist Olympia Scarry (1983) has produced a new corpus of sculptural works that capture the traces of time and sound imprinted on synthesized organic matter. The crystallized minerals of geological time, or deep time, are transformed into the translucent veins in onyx, while the designs engraved in the stone interrupt its flow. Moiré-like lines, which in mathematical terms represent a large-scale interference and which in physics is considered a sonar "beat" (when two identical shapes do not exactly overlap), are here taken up by oil paintings on paper as a waterfall of conversations. Soap is a purification process, a process of attempted preservation that is unattainable. The stored fats continue to burn in the internal cavity, evolving with environmental conditions and exposing the signs of aging. Borosilicate glass, a material used for laboratory experiments and in the field of optics, lies on the floor tied in bundles like a fiber optic cable connecting one element of empty space to another. Light operates its wave metamorphosis as a conductor of light, parallel lines meet only at the point of infinity.

Artificial interventions within the natural elements create an alchemy of stillness challenged by sound and time. White Noise, the white sound, is in other words a randomly transmitted sound that can have equal intensity at different frequencies and to which a constant power density is given as in white light, which although appearing as such is defined as the complex mixture of all wavelengths of the visible spectrum. Scarry's work resonates through materiality.
