The Mineralogical Museum of Caltanissetta is located in the historic center of the city and is located in the spaces adjacent to the public school. The institution was born in 2012 with the inauguration of the new exhibition spaces. The museum is also known as the "Sebastiano Mottura mineralogical, paleontological and solfara museum" for its collection of minerals and fossils. The collection is unique in its kind for the variety of objects on display and for the section dedicated to period tools used in mining. The collection of fossils and minerals amounts to a total of 2500 minerals and 1500 finds from various geological eras. Of rarity are the sulfur samples that are grouped by variety of shapes, transparency, crystalline grouping and structure. The artifacts are evidence of the sulfur extraction operations in the area. Several panels tell the story of sulfur extraction, together with a rich documentation of period photos.
