Monastery of San Benedetto Sacro Speco

The monastery of San Benedetto, or Sanctuary of the Sacro Speco, is an ancient Benedictine monastery located near Subiaco, a small village in Lazio. The monastery is nestled in a rocky wall of Mount Taleo. In this harsh and wild place, St. Benedict in complete solitude matured that spirituality that led him to found the first monastic communities along the valley of the Aniene river, from which the entire Western monasticism would later develop. The interior of the Monastery of San Benedetto is a labyrinth of rooms, sometimes carved into the rock, which amaze with the precious frescoes from various eras, extraordinary in quality and conservation. Among the frescoes that decorate the structure, two are particularly precious. The first represents the oldest existing portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, an exceptional pilgrim who reached Subiaco in 1223 following Cardinal Ugolino, the future Pope Gregory IX. The ancient refectory houses an extraordinary 14th-century Last Supper, recently restored to its former glory.
