Hermitage of San Leonardo al Lago

The Hermitage of San Leonardo al Lago is located in Monteriggioni, a famous town near Siena. The Hermitage is located on one of the most interesting and historical routes in Tuscany: the Via Francigena. According to historical sources, the Hermitage dates back to 1112, but it was most likely built before 1100. It is said that local religious personalities, such as Blessed Agostino Novello, spent most of their lives here. The remains of the Hermitage refer to a wall and two towers, one square and the other round. Originally the architecture included a large monastic complex of the first hermits of the Augustinian order. The medieval cloister developed inside the complex. Between the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century the entire complex was renovated and enlarged with the construction of a Romanesque church and a new Gothic church. Between 1360 and 1370, the church choir was frescoed by the Sienese painter Lippo Vanni. The fresco decorations tell the story of the Virgin. On the ground floor there was the refectory with the frescoes attributed to Giovanni Paolo and depicting the Crucifixion.
