Museo Archeologico Ferruccio Barreca

The MAB (archaeological museum Ferruccio Barreca) offers a wide selection of archaeological materials found in excavation works, which still take place in the island of Sant'Antioco.
The archaeological finds cover a wide span of time, from Romanization. The majority of the materials comes from the Punic necropolis, from the tophet and from the ancient Phoenician, Punic and Roman city of Sulky, the oldest Phoenician city in the centre of Sardinia.

The sacred area called tophet, adjacent to the MAB, was used from the first half of the 8th century B.C. and abandoned during the 1st century BC.
It is an open-air sanctuary dedicated to the god Baal Hammon and Tinnit, in which the Phoenicians and Carthaginians buried with special rituals the cremated remains of stillborn babies or children who died in infancy. It was previously believed that these remains belonged to children offered as a sacrifice to the two deities.
