Museo archeologico delle Necropoli Rupestri

The Rock Necropolis Museum, established in the second half of the last century, preserves the historical and archaeological memory of the Etruscan town of San Giuliano, a center on the outskirts of the ancient city of Tarquinia, from its origins to Romanization. The tour is dedicated to the phenomenon of rock funerary architecture widely witnessed in the Viterbo area, but which here is characterized by its monumental forms and suggestive stone landscapes, which evoke links with some regions of the eastern Mediterranean. The significant kits from the burial grounds of different eras invite to the discovery of the Etruscan civilization: wine vases, precious jewels, tools for domestic activities, ritual objects, manifest the need for self-representation of the ancients in the delicate and mysterious passage towards the over there.

In the main room there are the grave goods, biconical cineraries from the Iron Age (9th century BC) from Chiusa Cima-Sant'Antonio, orientalizing ceramics (7th century BC) from Tumulo Chiusa Cima extraordinary testimony of the pomp exhibited by the Etruscan princes . The period of greatest splendor of the town during the sixth century BC, evidenced by the aforementioned rock architectures, is recognized by the considerable amount of Etruscan and Attic black-figure pottery or by the large containers of red clay from the Obelisk Tomb of the sixth century BC, funerary monument of exceptional symbolic value for the rare pyramid-shaped stone that stood in the square in front of the tomb where funeral ceremonies were celebrated. Finally, the rich silver and Etruscan red-figure pottery from the IV-III century. B.C. century BC, for example from the Tomba del Cervo, evidence of the new flowering of the center in this period. The museum's prerogative is the close relationship with the Marturanum Regional Park, guardian of the archaeological area that houses the town and necropolis, which can be visited and enjoyed through equipped thematic routes.
