The Cerite National Museum

The Cerite National Museum is the archaeological museum of the city of Cerveteri, in the province of Rome, dedicated to Etruscan art coming mainly from the necropolis of the ancient Etruscan city of Caere, including that of Banditaccia. It is housed in the Ruspoli castle, in the historic center of the city. Its collections include remains from the numerous necropolises of the ancient city: the Villanovan era for the Sepolcreto del Sorbo; Hellenistic period: the Tasmie tomb and the tomb of the Banditaccia sarcophagi; various ceramics in bucchero, amphorae, funerary vases and also some lids of figurative sarcophagi (original or reproduced). Notable pieces from these archaeological areas are kept in the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia and the Louvre Museum. Since 2015, the Cerite Museum has housed two extraordinary finds: the Euphronios Krater and Kylix. These are two Attic red-figure ceramics from the 5th century BC, magnificent examples of the most refined Athenian ceramic production. Both vases were stolen during illegal excavations in the Cerveteri area and taken abroad where they were exhibited for a long time: the Crater in the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Kylix in the Getty Museum in Malibu. Finally returned to the Italian State, after an initial placement in the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, in Rome, the two masterpieces were definitively assigned to the Cerveteri Museum.
