The Sannio Museum is the main museum center in the province of Benevento and one of the most important in Campania. Housed in the extraordinary architectural setting of the Abbey of Santa Sofia, Unesco World Heritage since 2011 with its splendid 12th century cloister, it allows a fascinating journey from prehistoric times to the contemporary age. The first nucleus of the collection dates back to 1873 and was first placed inside the Rocca dei Rettore, currently the seat of the Historical Section. In 1928 the provincial administration bought the Abbey of Santa Sofia, transforming it into a provincial museum, reorganizing and expanding the exhibition in the following decades. At the end of the nineties of the last century, the restructuring of part of the rooms in the north wing of the museum dates back to, and subsequently the collections were also housed in a wing of the historic Palazzo Casiello. The museum collection is one of the most varied, and represents a shining example of a traditional type of territorial museum, that is a collection that has been established over time, through a series of donations, purchases and assignments from all over the territory. The museum collects historical testimonies that start from the Samnite and Roman periods, passing through the Lombard age, then ranging from the '400 to the 800, up to works by the most important national artists of the' 900.
