Civic Museum Gaetano Filangieri

The Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum is located in the historic center of Naples .

The Museum is located inside the fifteenth-century Palazzo Como dedicated to sculpture, painting, applied arts and the conservation of ancient books. The Museum takes its name from Gaetano Filangieri who designed the exhibition from 1881 to 1888. In 1946 the collection was partially destroyed due to bombing during the Second World War.

In fact, the superintendent Bruno Molajoli turned to the Neapolitans to make donations that were to supplement the destroyed collections.

The collection of the Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum preserves more than 3000 objects including majolica, porcelain, ivory, paintings and sculptures . The paintings present are by artists of the Neapolitan culture of the seventeenth century, including Jusepe de Ribera, Luca Giordano, Andrea Vaccaro, Battistello Caracciolo and Mattia Preti .

In particular we remember: "the Deposition" by Francesco Solimena, "The Education of the Virgin" by Bernardino Luini and two "portraits of men" by Botticelli. The upper room of the museum is dedicated to Agata Moncada di Paternò , mother of Prince Filangieri. Inside the room a real wunderkammer has been set up with paintings, metal objects and porcelain . Inside the Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum there is also a library that includes almost 30,000 volumes and a historical archive with documents from 1200 to 1800.
