The Irpino Museum of Avellino was born in the second half of the nineteenth century, following the donation, by bequest, of the antiques collection of the lawyer Giuseppe Zigarelli to the Municipality of Avellino. Over the years, following further acquisitions of materials, deriving from excavations conducted in various areas of the Irpinia area, the structure has been significantly enriched, becoming the emblem of the historical-archaeological importance that Irpinia holds in the context of cultural deposits. Campania and therefore placing itself as an obligatory initial stop for those who want to get closer to the knowledge of this territory and its history. The Museum is divided into several rooms, each dedicated to an area of origin, including the Zigarelli collection itself, which can be defined as a collection of materials from the Iron Age, largely coming from the upper valley of the Ofanto river with other nuclei of materials of uncertain origin. The current arrangement is the result of a choice that reconciles two fundamental elements: the chronological sequence (from Prehistory to the late Roman Age) of the materials and their original context of origin. Together with the Provincial Scipione and Giulio Capone Library and the Provincial Art Gallery, recently set up in the Bourbon Prison, it constitutes one of the most interesting cultural centers of our territory and, therefore, is at the center of the enhancement and communication needs that every cultural deposit , in itself, poses. It is located in a building of neo-rationalist architecture, designed by the architect. Francesco Fariello, winner of a national competition of ideas in 1951. The structure stands on the site once occupied by the Botanical Garden of the Bourbon period, as is still witnessed today by the rich adjoining garden.
