The Messina Regional Interdisciplinary Museum is located in the historic center of Messina and is located in the former Barbera spinning mill - Mellinghoff. The Museum was founded in 1806 as a Civic Museum with the aim of conserving and enhancing the large collection of paintings owned by the Senate of Messina. The Museum is rich in works of figurative art ranging from 1100 to the eighteenth century. The collection includes paintings, sculptures and decorative artifacts of extraordinary importance by artists such as Girolamo Alibrandi, Vincenzo Catena, Annibale Carracci, Mattia Preti, Caravaggio, Francesco Laurana, Antonello da Messina and many others. Among the most important paintings are the two canvases by Caravaggio: “The Adoration of the Shepherds” and the “Resurrection of Lazarus”. The marble works include numerous Roman and Byzantine workers with capitals, pillars and baptismal fonts. Many of the works currently exhibited in the museum were formerly part of the Messina Cathedral collection. In fact, many sacred furnishings and wooden materials come from the rooms adjacent to the Duomo and from the interiors themselves. For example, the ceiling of the Cathedral is certainly of great value with the depictions of St. George, the Warrior Angels and Jonah coming out of the whale's mouth. The flowery branch in gold, pearls, emeralds and enamels of the seventeenth century belongs to the precious treasure of the Cathedral of Messina.
