The submerged park of Gaiola is located a short distance from Naples in the homonymous gulf .
The submerged park of Gaiola is famous all over the world for its heterogeneity and variety of marine organisms. The area is also important for the presence of submerged archaeological remains . The site was built by the Roman Knight Publio Vedio Pollione in the 1st century BC and over time it underwent modifications and extensions. Various remains are visible on the seabed such as nymphaeums, walkways, fish farms and fish ponds .
The breeding tanks were very popular among the Romans, in fact they are known in the writings of Seneca and Pliny. According to Pliny these were used to throw distracted slaves to feed the moray eels of the fish ponds. The only building that emerges from the park is the famous " House of the Spirits ". From a geological point of view, the area is protected and considered part of the Phlegraean volcano system, which is why it is subject to seismic movements. The Caves of Trentaremi , on the other hand, are evidence of the mining activity that began in the Greek-Roman era.
