The show

On 12 December a large exhibition opens in Turin, in the monumental rooms of Palazzo Madama, starring Andrea Mantegna (Isola di Carturo 1431 - Mantua 1506), one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, able to combine passion in his works for classical antiquity, daring perspective experiments and an extraordinary realism in the rendering of the human figure. Around his works are articulated the testimonies of an artistic season - the Renaissance in the Po valley, first in Padua and then in Mantua - capable of reliving the ancient and building the modern.

The exhibition presents the artistic career of the great painter, from the prodigious early beginnings to the recognized role of court artist of the Gonzagas , divided into six sections that highlight particular moments of his career and significant aspects of his interests and his artistic personality, illustrating at the time himself some less investigated themes such as Mantegna's relationship with architecture and writers.

Visitors are thus offered a broad reading of the figure of the artist , who defined his highly original formative language on the basis of the deep and direct knowledge of Donatello's Paduan works, of familiarity with the works of Jacopo Bellini and his sons (in particular of the brilliant Giovanni), of the Florentine and Flemish novelties, as well as of the study of ancient sculpture.
