Carnavalet Museum - History of Paris

The Musée Carnavalet is a Paris museum located in the Marais district, in the 3rd arrondissement. It is entirely dedicated to the history of the city of Paris. The Carnavalet Museum was opened in 1880 and its collection includes works, artifacts or reconstructions that trace 400,000 years of history. In fact, the Carnavalet Museum traces the history of Paris since prehistoric times, with museum sections dedicated to archaeological artefacts from ancient and medieval times. The remaining sections retrace the salient moments of the city, through graphic works (photographs, posters, drawings), signs, noble furnishings, numismatics, models of historical reproductions and sculptures and paintings of great value. Twelve rooms are reserved for the French Revolution, with numerous objects, models, emblems and prints. Of particular note are objects such as the keys of the Bastille, original handcuffs, reduced models of guillotines, the dressing table of Queen Marie Antoinette, and original furniture of environments such as the room of Marcel Proust, in which he wrote "In search of lost time" and the rooms of the Second Empire. The visit to the museum is free, with the exception of temporary exhibitions which are sometimes set up.
