The show

Curated by Glenn Phillips and Philipp Kaiser with the collaboration of Doris Chon and Pietro Rigolo

After making its debut at the GRI in Los Angeles, which in 2011 acquired Szeemann's boundless archive, and having made a stop at the Kunsthalle in Bern and at the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, the exhibition is presented at the Castello di Rivoli with an installation that focuses on intense close relations between the curator and the Turin artists, integrating works from the Castello di Rivoli and from other important collections into the exhibition itinerary.

The exhibition, organized by the Getty Research Institute (GRI) of Los Angeles in collaboration with the Research Center of Castello di Rivoli (CRRI) , is the first exhibition dedicated to the life and career of Harald Szeemann (Bern, 1933 - Tegna, Switzerland, 2005), to whom we owe the birth at the end of the 60s of the figure of the independent curator and the conception of the exhibition as a creative expression and autonomous form of language.

The exhibition itinerary develops through a series of themes that intend to offer visitors a glimpse into the thought, visions and obsessions, disputes and controversies that have accompanied the human and professional life of the Swiss curator, presenting a precious selection of archival materials, photographic and video documentation, and a selection of works of art that have characterized his most important exhibitions, including Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form (1969) and documenta 5 (1972) , flanked by Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us / Nonno: a pioneer like us who reconstructs Szeemann's first exhibition project following documenta 5 for which, in 1974, in his home in Bern, the curator retraced the life of his hairdresser grandfather Étienne " Stephan ”Szeemann.
