The show

From Thursday 17 February to Saturday 11 June 2022 the Benedetto Robazza Museum in Rocca Priora will host the temporary exhibition of Rosario Oliva , the first of the new events of the Rocca Priora cultural season for the year 2022 which takes the title of " Culture, beauty, freedom: the human landscape ”, elaborated by the Councilor for Culture Carmen Zorani of in collaboration with the staff of the Benedetto Robazza Museum and the Luigi Porcari Library.

Rosario Oliva's painting moves between the figurative and the abstract , in a beautiful and free digression through portraits, landscapes and “contemporary images”. The solo exhibition is thematically divided into two sections.

The first is dedicated to pictorial images depicting a contemporary society completely sucked into digital and social tools, which the artist seems to paint almost as photographic "snapshots": these are the " contemporary images " that characterize one of the main poetic strands of art. of Oliva. In these paintings the portrayed characters appear evanescent, not well identified: in fact, they are not subjectivized but represent the symbols of the entire global society whose identity is clouded by the tools they hold. Not surprisingly, most of the time these characters are naked, holding only a smartphone from which notifications from social networks appear, especially Instagram . They are people empty in their characterization, or rather emptied in their identity from the fictitious digital one that they show with ostentation. They are people distracted, in their daily life and in their affections, from the virtual reality that they have built as an almost more credible parallel reality.

The second section of the exhibition, on the other hand, includes portraits and landscapes . The portraits, both in acrylic and in oil on canvas and in charcoal on paper, are - as opposed to the previous paintings - well characterized. The brushstroke in the portraits is much more full-bodied, but always very broad and graphic, certainly mindful of the artist's professional illustrative training and his link with the art of Toulouse-Lautrec.

The landscapes, on the other hand, constitute a sort of interlude between the evanescence of social paintings and the characterization of portraits: we move from large square canvases where the setting is well defined, to small rectangular tables where the panorama is only sketched, in a sort of almost direct reference to William Turner's romantic landscapes. Furthermore, in many of the landscapes on display there is a direct reference to "social canvases" through an exasperated use of the dripping technique on the lower edge of the canvas: this "dripping post litteram" aims to simulate the incompleteness of the painting and its possible completion in the viewer's imagination.
