closed Women in Comics

The show

The original exhibition arrives in Rome which was staged only once in 2020 at the Gallery of the prestigious Society of Illustrators in New York, the professional association founded by Henry S. Fleming in 1901 (today directed by Anelle Miller) which, in addition to exhibitions, every year since 1959, produces and publishes Illustrators Annual, considered one of the most important illustration catalogs in the world.

Composed of 90 original works, the Women in Comics exhibition offers a story of self-determination of North American comics thanks to its 22 protagonists who, from the vintage comics of the 50s to the most authorial graphic novel, exploring themes such as love, sexuality, creativity, discrimination, independence , crosses the psychedelia of the 70s and underground comics, up to the contemporary mainstream scene of Marvel and DC Comics.

Alongside the tables of Trina Robbins, a true "militant" icon of underground comics and feminist activism who in 1986 was the first cartoonist in history to draw Wonder Woman for a major like DC Comics, there will be original works by Afua Richardson and Alitha Martinez (both African American authors and activists, Eisner Award winners for their work on Marvel's World of Wakanda, a spin-off series of Ta-Nehisi Coates' former political Black Panther), by Colleen Doran (who he drew on the texts of screenwriters of the caliber of Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore) and Emil Ferris, whose graphic novel My Favorite Thing Are Monsters (published in Italy by Bao Publishing) has become a real editorial success with critics and audiences, also awarded the Fauve d'Or at the Angoulême International Festival as "Best Comic of the Year" in 2018.

And again: Ebony Flowers (author of Hot Comb, considered by Guardian, Washington Post and Believer one of the best books of 2019), Trinidad Escobar (Filipino cartoonist and poet from San Francisco, where she teaches at California College of the Arts), Tillie Walden (On a ray of sunshine, Bao), Jen Wang (The Prince and the seamstress, Bao), Joyce Farmer (Special Exits, Eris Edizioni) and many others.
