The Luigi Pigorini Prehistoric Ethnographic Museum has merged into the new Museum of Civilizations which is located in the EUR district in Rome. The Museum consists of two exhibition itineraries: on the first floor the non-European ethnography (Africa, Americas, Oceania), on the second floor Prehistory. The ethnographic section contains materials that document the cultures of all continents; these are objects that, in addition to having an artistic and religious character, testify to the various aspects of the material culture of extra-European populations. The African section investigates three fundamental historical moments of the encounter between Africa and the West: the discovery of the west coast with the first African objects in Italy, the exploration of the interior of the continent with the related ethnographic collections. One section is dedicated to the archaeological cultures of Central America and the Andean world. The section on South American cultures and the Amazon area is under construction. Six thematic sections range from the relationship of man with spirituality, with art, with power, with the ancestors and with the land of the people of Oceania. In the part dedicated to prehistory there are important finds from prehistoric Lazio such as the cast of the Neanderthal skull of the Grotta Guattari al Circeo (the original is kept in a room not accessible to the public), human testimonies from the first stone tools to iron metallurgy. Of extraordinary value are also the finds from underwater excavations such as the pirogue of about 10m in length, carved out of oak wood.
