The Central Institute for Intangible Heritage and the National Association of Nativity Scene Cities organize and promote, in collaboration with the National Roman Museum - Palazzo Altemps, and with the support of the General Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Culture, Science and Education Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, the exhibition Making Nativity Scenes. Knowledge and practices of communities, which will be open to the public from December 11, 2025, to January 10, 2026, during the normal opening hours of the Museum, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm. Inside Palazzo Altemps, in the church of Sant'Aniceto and in the adjacent chapel of San Carlo Borromeo, a small group of nativity scenes from different Italian regions will be exhibited, narrating, along with the Nativity, the cultural, territorial, and landscape specificities of their places of origin. Through the exhibited nativity scenes and their stories, the exhibition aims to evoke the cultural and social richness of the nativity scene activity as a dynamic expressive form linked to the vitality of communities, conveying the continuous process of elaboration and hybridization of knowledge, values, identities, and worldviews. Every year, the construction of the nativity scene becomes, for many territorial communities, an opportunity for meeting, transmitting traditions, creativity, and renewing social relationships. It is also an expression of artisanal skills of nativity scene makers who are witnesses of traditions and knowledge that are often at risk of disappearing.
