Monastery of Santa Scolastica

The Monastery of Santa Scolastica is the oldest of the 12 monasteries founded in Subiaco by San Benedetto da Norcia, the only one that survived the earthquakes and Saracen destruction. Founded around the year 520, it includes buildings built in different eras and styles. Proof of this are the three exceptional cloisters, one in Gothic style, one in Renaissance style, and the third dating back to 1200, a splendid example of Cosmatesque architecture. Inside is the cathedral of Santa Scolastica with its Romanesque bell tower. The current church dates back to the late 1700s, the last of five churches that have stratified over the centuries. The historical and cultural importance of the Monastery of Santa Scolastica also derives from the fact that in 1465 two German clerics A. Pannartz and C. Sweynheym built the first Italian printing house, which expanded the already rich Library where it is possible to find books of great value. The entire monastic complex falls within the Regional Natural Park of the Simbruini Mountains.
