From 6 December to 3 May 2026
From Saturday December 6, 2025 to Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the MVSA - Valtellinese Museum of History and Art of the Municipality of Sondrio the exhibition "Last year's snows" , curated by Elena Pontiggia, promoted by the Municipality of Sondrio as part of the various activities of the " Olympics of Culture - The Mountain on Stage in Sondrio " and is part of the program of the Culture Olympics 2026.
The exhibition path offers a fascinating itinerary that explores the multiple interpretations of snowy landscapes in Italian art, thanks to loans from private individuals and works from various cultural institutions: Museo della Permanente in Milan, Museo di Arte Contemporanea Angelo Vaninetti, Galleria Ponte Rosso, Collezione Mureddu, Collezione Penagini, and Collezione Poscio.
Through a rich selection of works covering a time span from the late nineteenth century to the present day, visitors will observe how snow is not just a decorative element, but becomes a true expressive language.
Numerous artists are featured in the exhibition, listed here in chronological order based on the dating of their respective works: Arturo Tosi, Federico Ashton, Mario Sironi, Enzo Morelli, Siro Penagini, Domenico De Bernardi, Cesare Gheduzzi, Carlo Fornara, Francesco De Rocchi, Adriano Di Spilimbergo, Renato Vernizzi, Giosetta Fioroni, Angelo Vaninetti, Marcovinicio, Massimo Boffa, Letizia Fornasieri, Marcello Malandugno, Giacomo Toselli, Tullio Pericoli, and Aldo Damioli.
The thematic itinerary is designed to highlight the different ways of perceiving and representing winter whiteness. Visitors will be guided through scenes that juxtapose the majestic Alpine scenery, where snow appears solid, eternal, and monumental, with silent and geometric urban landscapes, where white softens the city noises and draws new perspectives.
Each selected work offers a different stylistic solution to the representation of color and light in winter: from brushstrokes that seek to capture the powerful and changing light of high altitudes, to techniques that dissolve forms in a muffled atmosphere, to contemporary interpretations where snow becomes a conceptual symbol or a visual enigma.
The exhibition is, ultimately, an invitation to contemplation, offering a privileged look at the art's ability to preserve ephemeral beauty and transform a meteorological phenomenon into memory and poetry.
