The GAM of Turin is happy to present the exhibition dedicated to Claudio Parmiggiani (Luzzara, 1943), the fourth appointment of the exhibition cycle born from the collaboration between the Historical Archives of the Venice Biennale and the Video Library, aimed at witnessing the initial season of the video of Italian artist.
The exhibition presents Delocazione, the only video work created by Parmiggiani, produced by Art / Tapes / 22 of Florence in 1974, together with two capital works in the development of his work, coming from the Maramotti Collection of Reggio Emilia: the photographic print on board Delocazione 2 of 1970, and Self-portrait of 1979, a shadow silhouette reproduced on canvas, also a unique work in the artist's career.
The triangulation of these three works encloses the entire arc of visual opposites that runs through Parmiggiani's work. The absence of the work, which emerges in reserve on the wall, in the white surrounded by the gray of dust and soot, is reflected in its visual opposite: the projection of a gray shadow that is drawn on the white canvas, a denied presence of the gaze of the artist on the vanished image.
The relationship between these three works is completed in a selection of books made by Parmiggiani between 1968 and 1977, coming from the Maramotti Collection and the CRT Collection. Books designed by an artist for whom the blank page is not made for the reproduction or documentation of the work, but is first and foremost a space for the manifestation of the work and, at the same time, the first place for absence.
