Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama located in Piazza Castello in Turin is a UNESCO World Heritage building, as part of the Savoy Residences serial site.

It is one of the oldest and most fascinating buildings in the city, with architectural and historical evidence from the Roman age to the Baroque of Filippo Juvarra, who designed the current façade in 1716-1718.

Palazzo Madama owes its name to Madama Cristina of Bourbon-France , known as the " first Royal Madama ", who stayed there for some time. .

Palazzo Madama is today home to the Civic Museum of Ancient Art, founded in 1860. The museum houses a very rich collection which includes over 60,000 works of painting , sculpture and decorative arts from the Byzantine period to the nineteenth century .

The Museum's exhibition itinerary is divided over four floors. Starting from the level of the moat with the arts of the Middle Ages , with stone sculptures, mosaics, goldsmithery and access to the Medieval Garden . Going up to the ground floor you will find the arts from 1300 to the Renaissance . The first floor, with its baroque rooms, is dedicated to the arts of the 1600s and 1700s , with the picture gallery and the sumptuous decorations of the royal apartments. The second floor houses a collection of decorative arts from all eras.

The Palazzo Madama Museum boasts several masterpieces in its collection, including   the Portrait of a Man by Antonello da Messina , the illuminated golden book Très belles heures de Notre-Dame by Jean de Berry with miniatures by Jan Van Eyck, the Medici Vase, the porcelains from the Meissen factory and the Dancing Faun by Doccia , the Treasure of Desana and the works of Gaudenzio Ferrari, Orazio Gentileschi and Pietro Piffetti.
