ongoing WOMAN ON STAGE

The show

Woman on stage! The female figure protagonist of a fascinating tale of the high society between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A world in balance between tradition and progress in which women conquer spaces of freedom and independence from modernity. The greatest portraitists of the time will be the singers of this magical moment of theirs, called to eternalize the faces and looks, to transpose onto canvases the perfume, the charm, the eroticism of a truly unique era.

In the sumptuous exhibition Donna on stage. Boldini, Selvatico, Martini, promoted by the Municipality of Treviso, directed by Fabrizio Malachin and set up from 13 April to 28 July at the Santa Caterina Museum, hosts a conference of celebrities, from Eleonora Duse to Wally Toscanini, from Lydia Borelli to Toti Dal Monte, alongside to elegant exponents of the bourgeoisie and nobility of Treviso, Veneto and nationally, immortalized by the colors of the most successful painters between the two centuries, artists often specialized in large female portraits, and for this reason famous, admired, and disputed. From Giovanni Boldini, to Giacomo Grosso, from Cesare Tallone, to Vittorio Corcos, up to the British John Lavery, as well as the Italiens de Paris Giuseppe de Nittis and Federico Zandomeneghi. The selection of the great Venetians of the moment such as Ettore Tito, Pietro Pajetta, Eleuterio Pagliaro, and above all Giulio Ettore Erler and Lino Selvatico, the "Boldini Veneto" champion of the fashionable portrait of the early twentieth century, between Venice, Milan and Europe, is important. A first-rate selection is crowned by the exceptional presence of the most important masterpieces of Alberto Martini, precursor of surrealism and portraitist with a magical atmosphere.

At the Santa Caterina Museum the curtain is about to rise on a journey through large paintings, often absolute masterpieces, donated to the exhibition by institutions, museums and public and private collections, together with drawings, sculptures and posters - from the Treviso National Museum of the Salce Collection -, as well as a choice of period dresses, fans and hats that will bring the Belle Époque years to the stage. A partial representation, certainly, as it restores the image of a minority and privileged part of society, that protagonist of the high society, of worldliness, of fashionable salons and of joie de vivre, who competed to pose in front of the most fashionable painters , but not a simple catwalk of beautiful women and extraordinary paintings. Donna on stage is an exhibition that leads us to rediscover, relive, and dream of the charm of an era, projected towards modernity, but also decadent and sensually romantic.
