The Carlo Schmidl Theater Museum is located in the historic center of Trieste and was inaugurated in 1924 and since 2006 is located in Palazzo Gopcevich. The museum was created to enhance and promote the memory of the stage by the music publisher, music dealer and collector Carlo Schmidl. The tour is divided between the first and second floors and documents the history of theater and music in Trieste from the eighteenth century to today. On the second floor there are also the documentation and consultation services, as well as the spaces dedicated to the memory of Giorgio Strehler, with the personal archive and library. The collection is full of musical instruments, European and non-European, and the faithful reconstruction of the laboratory of the Trieste luthier Francesco Zapelli. Paintings are also added to the collection, mainly portraits of actors and musicians alongside prints by artists and theatrical locations. Significant are the theatrical costumes, stage jewels, marionettes, puppets and puppets that belonged to the actors. The Museum houses a library and a media library open to the public for external consultations.
