ongoing Italo Cremona

The show

The GAM of Turin dedicates an anthological exhibition to the work and creative universe of Italo Cremona which traces the artist's entire production.

The exhibition, curated by Giorgina Bertolino , Daniela Ferrari, Elena Volpato , is the result of the collaboration between the GAM of Turin and the Mart of Rovereto, where the exhibition will move next autumn.

The nocturne is one of the themes of Italo Cremona 's painting, an expressive, existential and philosophical condition that produces dreams, nightmares, apparitions, fantastic images. “ Everything else is deep night ” is the phrase with which Cremona concluded one of the texts of “Acethylene”, a column he wrote for “Paragone”, Roberto Longhi's magazine in the 1950s. Painter-writer, multifaceted and eccentric intellectual, in his paintings and writings Italo Cremona investigated the Shadow Zone (title of one of his books published by Einaudi in the white "Corals" series): a capacious territory, where darkness comes into contact with light through vivid flashes or glimmers; through the light of an acetylene lamp (the light once used by miners and speleologists) or the trail of a shooting star, as in the dystopian novel The Tail of the Comet.

All the rest is deep night is therefore a title-sign, the key chosen to trace an exhibition itinerary dedicated to the entire span of Italo Cremona's painting, from the first youthful attempts of the mid-twenties up to the works of the first half of the seventies, from still lifes close to the atmospheres of Magical Realism to the visionary nature of the "independent surrealist", as he loved to define himself.

The exhibition brings together around a hundred paintings and a selection of drawings and engravings and documents the artist's highest pictorial quality, rereading the originality of his imagery in the present. Starting from the core of works belonging to the GAM collection (from Self-portrait in the studio of 1927 to Metamorphosis of 1936, to Winter of 1940), the anthology counts on a series of loans from museums, including the Mart , partner of the project (Composition with lantern, 1926 and La Libra, 1929), the Luigi Barni Civic Museums of Vigevano (with Dialogue between a shell and a fencing glove from 1930 and a cohesive nucleus of visionary paintings from the 1940s and 1950s), the Accademia Albertina of Fine Arts and the Royal Museums - Sabauda Gallery of Turin .

Thanks to extensive research, the exhibition presents numerous works from private collections and loans from institutions such as the Casa Mollino Museum (Portrait of Carlo Mollino from 1928), the Salvo Archive (Youth Self-Portrait from 1926) the Bottari Lattes Collection (Vittoria sul chalk horse, 1940), the Rai Collection – Italian Radio and Television of Turin (Little Golem, 1940).
