The autumn of CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography in Turin will feature an extraordinary figure of the twentieth-century world culture: the American photographer Lee Miller. The new exhibition, curated by CAMERA's artistic director Walter Guadagnini, will present from October 1, 2025, to February 1, 2026, over 160 images all coming from the Lee Miller Archives, many of which are almost unpublished, for both a public and intimate interpretation of her work and her extraordinary personality. The exhibition also marks the beginning of the celebrations for the 10 years of the Center, which will propose a broad and articulated program dedicated to the world of photography in all its infinite facets.
The exhibition focuses on the intense activity between the Thirties and Fifties of the twentieth century of the extraordinary American author, an ideal bridge between the United States - her homeland - Europe, where she moved at a young age and decided to settle - first in Paris and then in England - and also Africa, where she spent some years of her intense life. Of American origin (born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1907), Lee Miller moved to Paris at the end of the twenties with the determination to become a photographer, convincing Man Ray to welcome her as an assistant in his studio.
From this moment, her real career begins, and she continues a life of extraordinary encounters and choices: she approaches the surrealist world, becoming a friend and muse of Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Paul Éluard, establishing relationships with artists such as Eileen Agar, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, and creating some of the most significant images in the history of surrealist photography, also contributing to the discovery of solarization, a technique that she and Man Ray would make the most of. Around the mid-thirties, she marries and moves to Egypt for a few years, where she creates landscape images with an enigmatic flavor, before returning to Europe on the eve of the world conflict.
