The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation presents Ludovica Carbotta 's solo show (Turin, 1982). The exhibition focuses on Monowe , an evolutionary project, ongoing since 2016, which sees the artist engaged in the conception and construction of an ideal city, an urban model created for a single individual. Through a plurality of expressive means, sculpture, installation, documents, sound works and performative actions, Carbotta gives shape to an organism in the making, in which the dimensions of fiction and reality coexist in a dialectical relationship.
The project is nourished by different sources of inspiration, utopian and science fiction literature, architectural theories and sociological analyzes, to produce a sophisticated reflection on the condition of isolation of the contemporary subject, seen as an effect of external dynamics or as a strategy of self-protection, legacy of a catastrophic past or an opportunity for future survival.
Until now, the city of Monowe has always presented itself by episodes, by architectural fragments, elements identified with specific functions, such as the access door, the factory, the museum, the watchtower. As institutions, these elements bring into play a dimension of social use that the monadic status of the inhabitant puts in crisis, offering the opportunity to analyze in the abstract the rules and conventions made obsolete by the disappearance of the community.
